The 2016 Subaru WRX Preview

Posted on Aug 04, 2015

One of the Australia’s most popular World Rally Cross (WRX) staging vehicles and performance compacts is set for a high-tech overhaul in the 2016 edition.

Drivers will feel the spirit of the times course through this new iteration of the zippy little number, with both the WRX Premium, WRX STI Premium models both featuring a host of new electronic safety, comfort, and entertainment features.

What it's Got:

Included is Subaru’s innovative lane change assist, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as well as standard dual airbag packages, anti-lock braking and head airbags. Many pundits are touting the new WRX as the safest performance compact “on the planet.” This is comes combined in Subaru’s new Vision Assist safety suite.

One more change of note is a 6.2” touchscreen fitted to the base-model WRX with rear-parking camera. Premium models boast a whopping 7” touchscreen. This integrates to all the latest smartphones, features Pandora customised radio and even has voice recognition. You’ll be able to use the WRX infotainment system much like a phone, featuring pinch and zoom control. You can upgrade the STI with a navigation option and a premium harmon/kardon 9-speaker audio system.

The entry-level WRX will also get a new 18” alloy wheel set and inverted struts, a 1” increase on last year.

Bad news, revheads: the Boxer engine is identical to last year’s model. Still, the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder gathers up 195kW and a respectable 343Nm of torque. You can also get a constant variable transmission model for all variants (Base, Premium and STI Premium.) You can also control the drivetrain with Subaru’s Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) system, selecting from three modes: intelligent, sport and sport sharp from a rotary dial located on the console. The STI has multi-mode driver differential, active torque vectoring and symmetrical all-wheel drive.
